Chad grew up in a Latino neighborhood in Southern California. His upbringing among people from different backgrounds spawned an interest in other cultures and the Spanish language (which he currently speaks at an advanced level). Growing up looking different from the people around him, Chad also learned to empathize with those who identify as outsiders. Chad struggled with substance abuse as a young man, finding himself entangled in the criminal justice system at an early age. Moving through the system Chad grew increasingly aware of the connections between poverty, racism, and the prison industrial complex. After earning his bachelor's degree in English from UCLA in 2012, Chad decided to begin volunteering. His volunteer history includes working with prison abolition groups and The Long Beach Rescue Mission. Currently, Chad is employed with a treatment center in Long Beach as an Admissions Tech, in addition to working as a Case Manager for We Know Stuff.
